A couple of weeks ago I watched my brother Robert and his wife Lisa perform at an open mic night at Lydia's in town. They sounded good, and I have always wanted to get the skill/nerve to perform in public.

The open mic at Lydia's is very cool too. There are many different genres of music and everyone gets around four or five songs to sing, so the setlists entice you if enjoy the performer and give your ears a break if you do not...

music, music all around - martin sexton show and upcoming releases

Wed, 2011-02-09 15:07 -- admin

Tressa and I saw John Martyn Martin Sexton play in Saskatoon on February 3rd. It was a good show. I only knew the songs Glory Bound and parts of Black Sheep beforehand, but was impressed. Sexton was much bluesier that I had previously thought and a very solid guitarist. He also has a really good voice...like...you don't even know how good, Vince. You don't even know ; )

It was a fun outing and we discovered that Tressa needs a wagon for her purse. So I welded her one ; )

Easing into the work day through classical music

Thu, 2011-02-03 14:41 -- admin

Recently, I've discovered a classical music program, tempo, on CBC radio 2 (105.5FM locally) that coincides with my drive to work. When it is -30 Celsius outside and I can barely open my eyes, it is a nice transition between sleep and dreams and the real world.

I have always liked classical music - in limited doses - so ten or fifteen minutes a day of increased exposure is perfect : )

*Note* Working on getting this to be a continuous playlist instead of stopping after each song.

arcade fire - we used to wait

I enjoyed this song the very first time I heard it. Good lyrics and melody. This song also has a cool interactive HTML5 video.

KCRW (Unofficial) Top 10 Albums of 2010

Fri, 2010-12-10 00:21 -- admin

It is getting near the end of the year, which means that I am starting to pick my top ten music albums of 2010. Looking for albums I may not have heard yet (but possibly should), I grabbed the twenty KCRW DJ Top 10 Picks of 2010, fed it into a spreadsheet and tabulated the results. I assigned ten points for first pick, nine for second, eight for third, etc. down to one for tenth pick. I also tabulated the raw number of selections.

Luke Doucet and the White Falcon show at Amigos

Mon, 2010-11-08 00:07 -- admin

Tressa and I saw Luke Doucet and the White Falcon play the second of back to back shows (November 3rd and 4th) at Amigos in Saskatoon. It was a fun evening.Luke Doucet and Tressa

The opening band was Sunparlour Players, whom I had not heard before. There opener number was folky and reminded me of mumford and sons or frightened rabbit and so I enjoyed it.

draw the line

david gray
song info:
lyrics:
Well we had to pull on something
so we're grabbing at the threads
and now the world's unravelin'
inside our very heads

Glasses smeared with lipstick
hungry eyes out in the street
Same old bodies moving to the same old beat

Had to draw the line
Had to draw the line

All this talk of hypnotising
we can ill afford
to give ourselves to sentiment
when our time is oh so short

Names beneath the lichen
on these, cemetery stones
There are carnivals of silver fish
waiting to dance upon our bones

Had to draw the line
help me draw the line
help me draw the line
help me draw the line

I've been doubting yours baby
I've been doubting mine
I've been out of circulation
where the sun don't shine
I've been doubting fame and wealth,
charity, even love itself
draw the line

I aint saying he's bad baby,
I aint saying he's good
Merely that he ain't so different
'neath the executioner's hood

In the name of liberty,
in the name of brotherhood
had to draw the line
had to draw the line

Need to take some pride baby
need to take some heart
need to take evasive action
when the rumpass start

Here we are buck naked yeah
but where should we begin ?
when it's not the flesh we're after
but the howlin' ghost within

help me draw the line
help me draw the line
help me draw the line
need to draw the line
help me draw the line
need to draw the line
had to draw the line
